TxDOT's New LBJ Project Underway
Construction on the Interstate 635 project, known as the New LBJ project, will be underway very soon. The project is being developed and constructed by the LBJ Infrastructure Group UC, a private developer, under a comprehensive development agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation. According to www.lbjexpress.com the project will double the capacity of I-635 between U.S. 75 and I-35E. Seventeen miles in length, the roadway will contain rebuilt freeway lanes and new express managed toll lanes.
Managed lanes are part of the North Texas Region's Metropolitan Transportation Plan and are facilities that add lane capacity to existing freeways by combining high occupancy vehicle (HOV) and new express lanes to improve freeway efficiency. At present, the NTTA does not have any managed lane projects.
A segment of the New LBJ project will cross over the Dallas North Tollway within the next couple of years. The NTTA is working early with the LBJ Express project team to minimize future interruptions to travel on the Dallas North Tollway. Currently, there is not a firm timeline for the New LBJ project construction over the Tollway.
