Sustainability the Focus of Southwest Parkway/Chisholm Trail As the one-year mark for construction of Southwest Parkway/Chisholm Trail draws near, motorists are beginning to see significant signs of progress on the northern-most sections of the corridor.
Funded by $117 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act monies, the Texas Department of Transportation began work in March 2010 on Section 3A, which includes the construction of Southwest Parkway frontage roads from Arborlawn Drive to Overton Ridge Boulevard and improvements to Interstate 20 and State Highway 183 from Hulen Street to Bryant Irvin Road. One month later, the NTTA began Section 2C advanced construction work in the Union Pacific Railroad Davidson Yard.
Sustainability remains a top priority for the NTTA with construction of additional sections expected to be underway in the near future. In a partnership with TxDOT, the NTTA will transfer approximately 1.2 million cubic yards of excavated material from Section 3A to be repurposed for Section 5, the 5.8 miles from Altamesa Boulevard/Dirks Road to Farm-to-Market Road 1187. NTTA and TxDOT officials expect the excavation and stockpile transfer operation to continue throughout 2011 and into 2012. Recycling the excavated material will help save costs for Section 5, which ultimately will need approximately 2 million cubic yards of material to fill the project. Once finished, more material will have been excavated for this project than was excavated for Cowboys Stadium.
The entire Southwest Parkway/Chisholm Trail corridor is expected to open to traffic in early 2014.
