New State Highway 121 now open in Denton County For NTTA customers, using the new toll road is simple. The NTTA TollTag will work just as it does on NTTA toll roads, and the charges will appear on your NTTA statement. The new TxTag® stickers and the Houston area EZ TAG also are accepted on SH 121. It is important to keep your license plate information up to date to ensure your TollTag account is properly charged and that you are not billed for toll charges for a vehicle you no longer own.
Drivers without TollTags are also welcome to use the new toll road. According to TxDOT officials in Austin, there’s no need to prepay or register. TxDOT will record the vehicle license plate and send the registered owner of the vehicle a monthly bill for the toll charges. The toll rates are one-third more for drivers who do not have an electronic toll tag to offset the costs related to recording and processing the license plate information. Also, a $1 statement fee will be applied to each monthly bill.
The first segments of the new toll road extend seven miles from FM 2281 (Old Denton Road) south to the Denton/Dallas County line near Denton Tap Road, providing improved access to DFW Airport and improved air quality for the region. Eventually, SH 121 will provide traffic relief through the fast-growing areas in Denton and Collin Counties. A pending agreement between TxDOT and the NTTA will make it possible for the NTTA to eventually provide toll collection and customer service center services for this road, but we will keep you posted on those developments. (refer to "protocol" story above.)
