South end update: Progress continues despite soggy weather
If you spend time driving on the south end of the Tollway at Wycliff Avenue or in the Oak Lawn area, you have probably noticed the construction. But have you noticed the progress?
After a closure in late June, the NTTA opened the Cedar Springs Road bridge to two-way traffic, which has greatly improved mobility in the area. In the same closure, crews were able to install new, larger drainage pipes under the Cedar Springs Road bridge to prevent the Tollway from flooding. The NTTA is proud to report that these drainage pipes were successful during the record-breaking rainfall in June and July.

Tolls for SH 121 not from NTTA
Are you one of the many motorists using the new toll road portion of State Highway (SH) 121 from just west of The Colony over to Coppell? If yes, then remember that SH 121 is currently operated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and they will bill you for the use of that 7-mile stretch of roadway.
NTTA TollTag customers can use this all electronic toll collection roadway and their tolls will be billed automatically to their TollTag account. Drivers without an up-to-date NTTA TollTag account, TxDOT “TxTag” or Harris County Toll Road Authority “EZ Tag” will receive a monthly bill from TxDOT for payment of the tolls. The video bill (travel now and pay later) option from TxDOT is one-third more than for drivers with a toll tag device. In addition, a $1 processing fee is added for each monthly invoice to non-tag customers.
For more information about SH 121 rates, billing and future plans for the roadway, please go to the TxDOT Web site at www.texas121.org

Command Center Tells: Tips for Wet Weather Driving
Every year, rain is listed as the cause of thousands of accidents. In the past two months, North Texas has experienced record-breaking rainfall. With the increased rainfall comes the challenge of driving safely in the rain. When roadways are wet, tires can lose traction causing vehicles to hydroplane and the driver to lose control. Additionally, visibility is greatly decreased during wet weather.
However, there are some tips that drivers can follow in order to decrease the chance of having an accident:
• SLOW DOWN – If you are driving slowly, you reduce the chance of your tires losing traction causing your vehicle to hydroplane. You also give yourself additional time to brake.
• ALLOW MORE TRAVEL TIME – Plan ahead and pay attention to weather conditions before you get on the road.

Maintenance Safety Rodeo

Safety First! Employees of the Maintenance Department at NTTA recently took part in a “safety rodeo” in which they competed
against their colleagues in different activities aimed at highlighting and improving safety practices. While the competition was a lot of fun and fellowship, more importantly employees were able to gain a sense of safety issues that their peers face day-to-day by taking part in cross-functional events.

Need A Litterbag? TxDOT Has Just What You Need
Our friends over at the Texas Department of Transportation have issued a new challenge to all Texans: Keep a litterbag in every vehicle.
The latest “Don’t Mess with Texas” awareness effort started in early July and continues through August. The Rock the Bag Tour features a new line of free plastic bags designed to appeal to a younger generation, but we know the young at heart will also want to take part. At tour stops across the state, visitors can pick up their favorite new litterbag. Choices include: an urban, hip-hop feel with the phrase “Neat Freak” in bold letters; another design with a rural flavor features a traditional red, white and blue flag with a monster truck; a third tattoo-style bag says “I Love Texas”; and the last one says “Rock the Bag” featuring a person break dancing.

Discussions Begin on SH 161 through Grand Prairie
The NTTA is committed to playing an integral role in meeting the region’s mobility needs by delivering projects such as State Highway (SH) 161. As planned, SH 161 will extend from the western end of the President George Bush Turnpike (Bush Turnpike) at SH 183 southward through Irving and Grand Prairie to Interstate Highway 20.
The NTTA has begun discussions with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to compile the terms and conditions that will be used to determine the market value of this much needed roadway. The NTTA understands the region’s urgency to complete this process and deliver this project. We look forward to working with TxDOT in the advancement of SH 161.
