Reconstruction Underway at Kelly Boulevard on Bush Turnpike

Work began in June to reconstruct the retaining wall at Kelly Boulevard on the President George Bush Turnpike.

Crews have worked mainly at night to excavate the remaining portions of the wall that had moved in early 2010. They drilled shafts, installed steel, and poured concrete for the drill shafts to support the new wall structure in July. In total, 172 drilled shaft columns were constructed.

In August, the construction crew will pour concrete for wall footings and columns and begin panel placement. The current schedule anticipates substantial completion of the project in mid-September. The retaining wall work at Kelly Boulevard is expected to reach final completion by early October 2011.

The focus of safety at the construction site has been consistent throughout the project. To stabilize the retaining wall, an emergency repair project was put into place in February 2010 until the wall could be reconstructed. Once the project is completed the main lanes will be returned to their final configuration with standard shoulders on either side.
