PGBT Eastern Extension Construction Heats Up

Construction crews on the President George Bush Turnpike Eastern Extension continue to battle the summer heat as the NTTA prepares to open the new toll road during a much cooler December 2011.

Motorists can expect to see several traffic switches, especially in the vicinity of State Highway 78 in Garland in the months ahead. Crews shifted both east- and westbound SH 66 motorists in the vicinity of Kirby Road and Liberty Grove Road in Rowlett onto the southern half of the newly completed SH 66 bridge. This effort reduces the open lanes of traffic on SH 66 to two lanes in each direction. Eastbound SH 66 motorists will have a dedicated left-turn lane onto the northbound frontage road. Westbound motorists cannot turn left onto the new southbound frontage road. Westbound motorists will use alternate routes, such as Martin Drive, to access Main Street. This construction pattern is expected to continue through October 2011.

Meanwhile, one northbound lane of Kirby Road between SH 66 and Main Street in Rowlett is open to traffic. The southbound lanes are split and are now on the new southbound frontage road.

The 9.9-mile extension runs through Garland, Sachse and Rowlett in eastern Dallas County. The NTTA appreciates the public’s patience as the Authority works to complete and open to traffic this important mobility project.
