Employee Transitions As the NTTA continues its transition from traditional toll booths and toward all-electronic toll collection (all-ETC), it remains committed to helping its former cash collection employees find new careers—both within and outside the Authority.
Betty Mabry and Gary Woodard are two toll collection employees who have recently taken part in the transition process offered to employees by the NTTA.
Betty has been with NTTA since 1986. She started as a toll attendant and progressed to the service manager of President George Bush Turnpike. After the all-ETC conversion announcement in 2007, Betty saw the transition as a time to further her education. With a great deal of internal support and help from the NTTA’s tuition reimbursement program, Betty is pursuing her Bachelor’s in Business Administration and is expected to graduate this year.
Gary started with NTTA in 2005 as a toll booth operator and service specialist, and has recently transitioned to a senior maintenance technician. In 2007, Gary took courses offered by NTTA that covered basic computer skills, communication skills, resume writing, Microsoft Office, professionalism in the workplace, mock interviewing, and customer service skills. Today, he is extremely proud to continue working for NTTA.
“The transition has been great. I just love working for NTTA,” he said.
The NTTA will soon begin to convert its toll roads, bridges and tunnels to all-electronic toll collection. The NTTA Board of Directors voted in August 2007 to convert the NTTA System to electronic tolling because all-ETC reduces stop-and-go traffic associated with cash lanes at toll plazas, leading to improved air quality. The uninterrupted flow of traffic increases safety and mobility.
