Southwest Parkway Advances with Contract Opportunities The NTTA published an advertisement in December 2009 calling for bids on the Southwest Parkway (SWP) project for advanced construction work in and around the Union Pacific Railroad’s (UPRR’s) Davidson Yard, between Forest Park Boulevard and Hulen Street in Fort Worth. Designated as Section 2C, the early construction package consists of retaining walls along the right-of-way between UPRR and SWP, the Rosedale Connector bridges, and several bridge components (bents) inside the Yard.
More than 20 contractors and interested parties participated in a related non-mandatory UPRR workshop on Dec. 14, which was followed by the mandatory pre-bid meeting on Dec. 18, 2009. A large contingent of contractors and vendors were on hand to receive a comprehensive overview from NTTA staff about details of the Section 2C construction package. Construction is expected to begin in March 2010.
Completion of construction across the UPRR Davidson Yard is a key component for a continuous SWP/SH 121 corridor from Interstate Highway (IH) 30 to Altamesa Boulevard. UPRR recently began construction of necessary improvements in the Yard, which is required before the NTTA can complete portions of SWP in and around the Yard. The bid-opening for Section 2C was on Friday, Jan. 15. Construction on the NTTA-designated Section 2C is expected to begin in March 2010.
In addition to Section 2C, SWP will be built in multiple construction packages, including:
• Section 1 IH30/Summit Avenue,
• Section 2 Rogers Road to south of Arborlawn Drive,
• Section 2B at Hulen Street and UPRR Davidson Yard,
• Section 3 south of Arborlawn Drive to south of Overton Ridge Boulevard, and
• Section 4 south of Overton Ridge Boulevard to south of Altamesa Boulevard.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is expected to begin construction of the local access improvement portions of Section 3 in early 2010. Upon finalizing all agreements between the partner agencies, the remaining sections of SWP are anticipated to proceed to construction starting in mid-2010. The project is expected to open in 2013.
Southwest Parkway, an 8.7-mile limited-access toll road, and Chisholm Trail Parkway combine to form a 28-mile roadway that will extend from the Fort Worth Central Business District in Tarrant County to the City of Cleburne in northern Johnson County. The project will enhance mobility between downtown Fort Worth and the fast developing areas in southwest Tarrant County while also reducing congestion and enhancing safety and convenience for the traveling public.
