Western Extension of PGBT in Grand Prairie Approaches 100% Design Completion Milestone As a design-build project, the President George Bush Turnpike Western Extension (PGBT WE) team conducts both design and construction activities at the same time. As the project in Grand Prairie nears its milestone of 100-percent completion of design work, construction progress will increase, and several detours are being put in place to accommodate the progress.
Recently, crews opened the detour on the south side of the Interstate 30/State Highway 161 interchange. The detour routes traffic south on SH 161 through a U-turn at Tarrant Drive, then back north on SH 161. The detour is expected to be in place through August 2011 to allow construction of the eastbound I-30 frontage road bridge.
Crews also opened the north side detour of the I-30/SH 161. Similar in design to the south side detour, traffic is being routed north on SH 161 through a U-turn at Egyptian Way, then back south on SH 161. This detour is expected to be in place through October 2011 for construction of the westbound I-30 frontage road bridge.
In addition, the I-30 exit/entrance ramps to SH 161 have been shifted onto temporary detour ramps located in the same vicinity as the original ramps. These detours will allow for the reconstruction of the existing exit/entrance ramps for the future five-level interchange.
Other ongoing construction activities include bridge column construction for direct-connectors located at I-20 and I-30 as well as continued retaining wall construction throughout the corridor. In addition, concrete paving continues along both east- and westbound I-20 main lanes. Earthwork construction and drill shaft and bent column construction are continuing.
A list of scheduled lane and ramp closures is also available in a link on the front page of www.ntta.org.
