All-Electronic/Cashless Toll Collection Implemented, Construction Continues

Now that the NTTA has finished converting all facilities to a cashless system on Dec. 11, 2010, construction continues at various locations of the Dallas North Tollway (DNT), Mountain Creek Lake Toll Bridge and Addison Airport Toll Tunnel.

To date, the main lane plaza near Parker Road and Keller Springs Road on the DNT were removed earlier this month. The demolition of these toll plazas was a key component in finalizing the conversion to cashless tolling. On Monday, Jan. 24, three side-by-side lanes opened in both directions at Keller Springs Road, moving closer to the the road's final configuration. Work is planned for the main plaza near Parker Road Saturday, Jan. 29 through Monday, Jan. 31 at 5:00 a.m., weather permitting, to complete side-by-side lanes. Construction will continue at these locations and periodic lane closures may be expected in the next few months.

The main toll booth plazas on the DNT in Addison and Plano were replaced with toll gantries that electronically read TollTags and/or license plate information. TollTag customers pay their tolls electronically from a pre-paid account by placing a TollTag transponder on their vehicles’ windshields. Each time the TollTag passes through a toll lane, the toll is deducted from the account. Non-TollTag customers will be billed through the mail through a system called ZipCash. ZipCash offers a pay-by-invoice option at higher rates for customers as the NTTA transitions to all-electronic tolling. When a motorist without a TollTag drives through tolling points, high-speed cameras take digital images of the license plate, and the tolls are billed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Toll road customers should keep moving through all toll gantries. Motorists are encouraged to follow signage and not stop at toll booths. Eventually, all toll booths will be removed.

This cashless tolling initiative will decrease traffic congestion, improve safety and enhance air quality.

Drivers who do not have TollTags can visit the NTTA website to open an account or find a local TollTag distributor. Or, drivers can be billed later through ZipCash, NTTA's pay-by-invoice service. Learn more at: http://www.ntta.org/AboutUs/WaysToPay.
