All-Electronic Toll Collection Video in the Works

The NTTA’s planned conversion to all-electronic toll collection (all-ETC) is making progress, and the authority is developing a new video to educate customers and stakeholders about the transition.

The video will be unveiled in early 2009, several months before the first all-ETC conversion along the President George Bush Turnpike. The video outlines the benefits of all-ETC, the construction process and the changes facing some NTTA customers. The all-ETC conversion is expected to improve safety and traffic flow for NTTA customers, and will result in cost savings for the authority. The NTTA Board of Directors approved the $92.6 million conversion to all-ETC in August 2007.

The video soon will be available on the NTTA Web site, www.ntta.org.

In addition, advance work on the all-ETC conversion started in early December with the installation of the first new pieces of equipment on the Bush Turnpike. This initial phase will result in only minor, off-peak lane closures. Current schedules call for the Bush Turnpike to switch to all-ETC in the third quarter of 2009. Plans allow for the use of existing ramp and main lane toll plaza structures, limiting construction-related disruptions to NTTA customers. Most work on the Bush Turnpike should be complete by early 2010.

The Dallas North Tollway is scheduled to begin all-ETC equipment installation in the second quarter of 2009, and will convert to all-ETC in the first quarter of 2010. Details are being finalized on the installation of new ETC equipment gantries and the removal of existing DNT ramp and main lane plazas, with all work scheduled to be complete by summer 2010.
