Transportation Commission Selects NTTA for SH 121 Toll Project

By a vote of 4-to-1, the members of the Texas Transportation Commission (TTC) voted on June 28 to allow the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) to finance, design, construct, operate and maintain the State Highway (SH) 121 toll project.

“The North Texas Tollway Authority Board of Directors and staff are pleased the members of the Commission established a process that secured the ‘best financial value’ for this project. Their vote reaffirms their commitment to the citizens we all serve,” said Paul N. Wageman, Chairman of the NTTA Board of Directors. “Now approved, we will begin working over the next 60 days with the Regional Transportation Council (RTC) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to deliver a project agreement in order to bring this most important mobility project to completion for our Collin, Dallas, Denton and Tarrant county partners.”

South End of Tollway Update: Out with the Old (bridge), In with the New (bridge)

On Monday, June 25, the Cedar Springs Road Bridge opened to two-way traffic after having only one lane open for westbound traffic while construction crews demolished the old Cedar Springs Road Bridge and completed most of the construction for the new one.

The NTTA is pleased to open the new Cedar Springs Road Bridge to two-way traffic because opening the bridge improves safety and mobility for the people that live, work and travel in this area. Opening the Cedar Springs Road Bridge to two-way traffic is an important milestone in this project.

Customers to Benefit from Technological Expansion

The NTTA recently renewed its commitment to customer service and innovative technology when the Board of Directors approved the expansion of the NTTA’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to furnish the newest extension of the Dallas North Tollway with the nationally-recognized technology that exists on all NTTA roadways. With this ITS expansion, the NTTA is increasing the number of cameras system-wide by approximately 30 percent. ITS cameras are used to detect any disturbances on the roadways including stalled cars, accidents or objects on the road.

The Good Word Travels

In the June edition of Driving Forward, we asked for you to send in your comments and let us know how we are doing. We were inundated with responses, and we appreciate each and every one of them! We are in the process of responding to those comments, but in the meantime, we want to let you know that ‘The Good Word Travels’!

This comment was received from a gentleman named Rob:
“I wanted to comment on your great customer service at all your Toll Tag stores. I switched from a credit account to a cash account some time back, which allows me to visit your stores to make payments and I have to say it has been a quick pleasant experience each time. Thank you.”

Design work continues on Southwest Parkway in Tarrant County

Tarrant County, here we come! Better yet, here we go! As early as 2010, the NTTA will open our first facility in Tarrant County, Southwest Parkway.

SH 121 / Southwest Parkway is being designed as an all electronic toll road from Fort Worth’s central business district to southwest Fort Worth. An extension of SH 121 into Johnson County referred to as the Chisholm Trail is currently under design by TxDOT. When complete, it will provide a continuous 28-mile, north-south, toll facility from Fort Worth to Cleburne. The project is a joint venture between the NTTA, the City of Fort Worth and TxDOT.

In the listing entitled "25 years of `Eureka' Moments," USA Today listed 25 "inventions that have changed our lives since 1982." The NTTA's introduction of electronic tolling was listed as the number 14 "eureka moment" with the following description:
