Customers to Benefit from Technological Expansion

The heart of the ITS, housed at the NTTA’s Command Center, is a digital video system for monitoring the roadways, coupled with incident detection software that can recognize a stalled car, an accident, a pedestrian on the roadway or debris, and alert a dispatcher within 30 seconds. The ITS includes sensors that can also detect rain and ice, and alert NTTA personnel of possible hazards so that they are able to take corrective action and notify motorists.

ITS contributes to NTTA roadways being some of the most technologically advanced in the nation, but the truly great thing about this technology is that it provides us with another way to improve service to our customers. Customers benefit from improved response time for incidents on our roadways, as well as increased safety, and the convenience of knowing the approximate time of their commute.

In addition to the cameras, the NTTA is adding four dynamic messaging signs which display travel time and other important messages, such as Amber Alerts, or travel and traffic advisories. The expansion also includes software to support the cameras and dynamic messaging signs.
