Oldest TollTag Account Still in Existence Prior to 1989, all motorists used cash to pay their tolls on the Dallas North Tollway. However, in 1989, a new, more convenient way to pay tolls made its debut: the TollTag.
Jennie Ling immediately recognized the value of having this brand new technology, and made way to get a TollTag. She opened her account on May 8, 1989 and received the number two TollTag.
Almost 20 years later, NTTA’s number two TollTag account is still in existence.
The NTTA has grown tremendously since Mrs. Ling opened her account in 1989. Since then, the Dallas North Tollway has extended from Briargrove Lane in Dallas to U.S. 380 north of Frisco, President George Bush Turnpike and the Addison Airport Toll Tunnel was built. There are now almost 1.5 million TollTags in existence and they can be used on toll roads throughout the state of Texas and for parking and pass-through privileges at Dallas/Fort Worth International and Love Field airport.
When asked what Mrs. Ling thought about the expansion of the NTTA system, she replied, “The progress has been fantabulous. Since I work in real estate, I use my TollTag frequently.”
In 1989, the NTTA became the first in the nation to provide the opportunity for electronic toll collection on its roadways. In 2007, USA Today recognized the NTTA’s decision to introduce electronic tolls as one of 25 “eureka moments” in the United States in the past 25 years.
