Weather Takes A Toll on South End of the Tollway

Here’s the latest progress report:

• The new deck for the Cedar Springs Bridge was placed in early May. Current plans are for the new bridge to open to traffic sometime between the first week and middle of June.

In the late June to early July timeframe, the remainder of the old Cedar Springs Bridge will need to be demolished. This will require another “temporary” weekend closure of the south end of the Tollway. As usual, the NTTA will work diligently to get this information to our customers via a Driving Forward “Special Alert” email, announcement to news media outlets and on our Web site, www.ntta.org.

A fourth and final “temporary” closure is tentatively scheduled for early August, so that our crews can hang new bridge beams to finish the bridge.

• Paving of the eastbound portion of Oak Lawn Avenue is continuing, as is paving of the northbound Tollway main lanes between Oak Lawn and Maple Avenues.

• Crews are continuing to place new panels for the walls along Oak Lawn Avenue, and on the southbound Tollway wall from Cedar Springs to the Wycliff Toll Plaza.

The south end of the Tollway improvement effort has now been underway for a full year. We thank you for your continued patience as we get closer to our completion date of late 2008.

When everything is complete, the improvements of the 40-year old southern part of the Tollway will provide streamlined traffic flow, additional safety enhancements and will relieve traffic congestion.

Please remember that everyone’s safety is our top priority during this renovation process. Please drive slowly and carefully when you approach and go through the construction areas. Also, please expect periodic delays from time to time. Meanwhile, our crews will make every effort possible to minimize any inconvenience that you may experience.
