Crews ready to improve new surface on southern end of Tollway

Using a relatively new method, the surface material made from black rock, will act as a seal on top of the old asphalt overlay. The best news is that it keeps water out, improves skid resistance and will remain black in color which is useful as a contrast to white lane stripes.

The overlay effort will require the ongoing, temporary closure of lanes along the Tollway for an estimated three months. Two lanes will be needed during the process that will occur Sunday through Thursday evenings. The NTTA schedules these lane closures during times of lowest traffic volume to minimize traffic delays and any other inconveniences. All efforts will be subject to weather conditions and will be postponed, if necessary.

A similar project was recently completed on a portion of the President George Bush Turnpike. That overlay was placed between Midway Road and IH 35E.

While NTTA roadways are tested annually, the experts anticipate that we won’t need to repeat this again for another 7-10 years.
