Electronic toll collection moves forward on the Bush Turnpike, delayed on the Dallas North Tollway

The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) Board of Directors approved two resolutions in April regarding the conversion to all-electronic toll collection (all-ETC).  All-ETC refers to the transition to cashless toll collection on NTTA roadways.

One resolution approves a contract for the conversion of toll plazas on the President George Bush Turnpike (PGBT), anticipated to begin in July of this year.  The other resolution postpones the conversion of the Dallas North Tollway (DNT) for one year, or to 2011.

“Delaying the transition of the DNT is a prudent decision that allows us to gather more information about the response to all-ETC prior to converting our busiest roadway,” said Interim Executive Director Janice Davis.  “It also allows us to delay about $40 million in spending during these tough economic times.”

In July of 2007, the NTTA Board of Directors approved a resolution to convert the NTTA’s entire system of roadways to all-ETC.  Transitioning to all-ETC is expected to improve safety, mobility and air quality in North Texas, as well as reduce operating costs for the NTTA.
