Cashless Tolling: Construction Ahead

Following the conversion to cashless tolling in December 2010, the NTTA still has a few more months of construction work to go as toll booths and other equipment are removed from the Dallas North Tollway and Addison Airport Toll Tunnel.

Crews already conducted primary construction work at Dallas North Tollway ramps at Spring Valley Drive, Royal Lane and Northwest Highway. Throughout April crews will continue to temporarily close various lanes and ramps along the Dallas North Tollway at Northwest Highway and Royal Lane. Residents can expect temporary ramp closures at Mockingbird Lane in May. The lane and ramp closures are necessary for a variety of projects ranging from demolition to electrical work to pouring concrete.

Customers who use the Addison Airport Toll Tunnel will soon see construction come to a close, as final touches are being made to the new cashless tolling system. Crews have completed a majority of the tunnel work with only pavement striping remaining.

The NTTA expects to complete the majority of construction work related to the conversion to cashless tolling on the Dallas North Tollway by fall.  Major ETC construction from Interstate 635 to the Sam Rayburn Tollway is expected to be complete by the end of summer. ETC construction from the SRT to the northern end of the DNT will be substantially complete by August and construction from the southern end of the DNT to I-635 is scheduled for substantial completion by late November. The ETC construction schedule does not include the SRT/DNT interchange progress, which is scheduled to be complete by January 2012.
The NTTA converted all of its roadways and bridges to a cashless system on Dec. 11, 2010. Previously existing main lane toll plazas were removed and crews finished adding a third main lane at those locations.

The cashless tolling system electronically reads TollTags and/or license plate information. This allows for little or no stop-and-go traffic, so motorists enjoy less traffic congestion, enhanced safety and improved air quality.
