Construction Underway on PGBT Eastern Extension Work on the first section of the 9.9-mile President George Bush Turnpike (PGBT) Eastern Extension has begun.
Contractors are identifying utility lines and clearing land in Rowlett from north of the future Merritt Road to south of Main Street. That stretch, referred to as “Section 30,” is one of five that make up the Eastern Extension.
The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) is responsible for the construction of Sections 28 through 31, which run from State Highway (SH) 78, where the PGBT currently ends, east and south to the Lake Ray Hubbard northern shore. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), a partner in the project, will construct Section 32, which includes a bridge over the lake and connections to Interstate Highway (IH) 30 in Rowlett.
Construction on Section 28, from west of SH 78 to west of Miles Road, will begin soon as well. The NTTA Board approved that contract with W.W. Webber LLC in September.
Bids for Section 29, from west of Miles Road to north of future Merritt Road, were opened on Sept. 25, with the apparent low bidder being Texas Sterling Construction. The NTTA board approved the contract for that section at its Oct. 15 meeting.
Bids for the construction of Section 31, from south of Main Street to the north bank of Lake Ray Hubbard, will be sought in November.
All four of the NTTA sections of the PGBT Eastern Extension are scheduled to be under construction by the end of this year. The entire corridor is expected to be open to traffic by late 2011.
Other partners involved in the effort are Dallas County and the cities of Dallas, Garland, Rowlett and Sachse.
