Be Prepared for too Much (or not Enough) Sun

Daylight Saving Time ends Nov. 6, which means that the amount of daylight available for daily commuters will change. With days getting shorter, drivers on their way to or from work often find themselves driving in the dark or looking directly into a rising or setting sun.

Now is a good time to check your headlights and brake lights to ensure that you can safely drive in the dark and be seen by other drivers.

Glare from the sun can be blinding and can cause significant driving hazards. To help combat the dangers caused by glare from the sun, follow these five tips:
  • Clean your windshield. Dirt and water spots on the windshield can compound problems caused by sun glare.
  • Wear polarized sunglasses. Ordinary sunglasses offer little relief from blinding sun rays, but polarized lenses break up the intense glare of the sun.
  • Don’t use cleaners that add shine to your vehicle’s dashboard. A shiny dashboard can add to the reflection of the sun in your eyes.
  • Drive with your headlights on to help other drivers see your vehicle better.
  • Increase your following distance behind other vehicles. Treat a blinding sun as you would any other dangers driving condition. Slow down and use extra caution.
The NTTA also wants to remind you that the end of Daylight Saving Time is the perfect time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors at home and refresh materials in your home disaster and first aid kits.
