Three New Members Join NTTA Board; Three Current Members Reappointed “On behalf of the board of directors, I welcome our three new colleagues to the NTTA board. We look forward to their service as we work aggressively to meet the region’s mobility needs,” said Paul N. Wageman, Chairman of the NTTA Board of Directors. “I am pleased that Dave, Bill and Bob will continue to serve on the board as they have made significant contributions to the Authority’s progress. I would also like to recognize and thank Jack Miller for his service on the board of directors; we’ll miss his wise counsel.”
In order to ensure equal representation among the NTTA’s member counties, SB 964 was passed by the 80th Texas Legislature and signed into law by Governor Rick Perry. SB 964 requires that there be two board members from each of the NTTA’s four founding counties (Collin, Dallas, Denton and Tarrant counties) effective Sept. 1, 2007. The Governor appoints one member from an adjacent county to the NTTA’s member counties. As the NTTA’s statute requires that board terms for each county expire in a staggered fashion, term lengths now vary for the new appointees.
Day, the Dallas County appointee, currently has a private optometry practice in Garland. He was appointed to a two-year term. Day formerly served as mayor of Garland. Additionally, his civic commitments include serving as a member of the North Central Texas Council of Government executive board, the Regional Transportation Council, as well as the North Texas Commission.
“Dallas County is extremely fortunate to have Dr. Day as our newest appointee to the NTTA Board. Dr. Day possesses a wealth of knowledge and passion for transportation related issues that will benefit Dallas County as well as our entire region, “ said Dallas County Commissioner Mike Cantrell. “He will be a great addition to a very professional and committed board of directors.”
Nowels, president of Nowels Gas Inc. has been in the retail gas and convenience store industry for over 18 years. He was appointed to a one-year term. Nowels is a former member of the Lewisville City Council. He has been active in the transportation arena, serving on both the Dallas Regional Mobility Coalition and the Regional Transportation Council. He also chaired the Better Safer Roads bond program for Denton County and has been active in several legislative programs.
Of the appointment of Nowels and the reappointment of Denison, Judge Mary Horn of Denton County said: “Denton County looks forward to its board appointments working to ensure that the NTTA does its part to fund, not only future toll roads, but non-toll facilities as well, creating a strong partnership in mobility solutions throughout the region.”
Tarrant County’s appointee, Vandergriff, is an Arlington attorney and automobile dealer who comes from a family long committed to public service. He was appointed to a one-year term. Currently, Vandergriff chairs the Planning and Zoning Commission for the City of Arlington, is the vice chairman of the Downtown Arlington Management Corporation, and is a member of the Board of Directors for the Arlington Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
“Victor Vandergriff, following in the footsteps of his father, Tom, brings a longstanding tradition of regional service to the NTTA board of directors. Victor, a successful businessman, has worked diligently in the Arlington area on planning and economic development issues,” said Tarrant County Judge B. Glen Whitley. “Furthermore, I truly appreciate all that Bill Meadows has done as a member of the NTTA board of directors while the authority has dealt with many controversial issues. He will continue to serve Tarrant County well on the NTTA board.”
