Roadway Customer Service Program Goes into Action

With the arrival of the 121 Tollway, formerly SH 121, to the NTTA system the newly created Roadway Customer Service team made its successful debut. The program’s top priority is to help keep NTTA customers safe and traffic flowing smoothly.

The team patrols the 121 Tollway 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist customers and emergency responders. Units assist stranded motorists; remove debris from the roadway; assist with the removal and protection of abandoned vehicles; provide protection to emergency responders, customers, and construction workers at incident scenes; and assist during disasters or regional emergencies and evacuations.

The first week of service, an average of 21 motorists were assisted per day with just one truck responding to calls. A second truck was added in mid-September to focus on the 121 Tollway, but it will also respond to incidents on the Dallas North Tollway and the President George Bush Turnpike within close proximity of the 121 Tollway.

The team has already proven valuable to NTTA customer Mike K. Mike had a flat tire while traveling the 121 Tollway and received assistance from the team and was back on the road before his regular roadside service agency – who he had called to assist – had even arrived. He says the program proved invaluable to him and called personally to express his thanks to the team.

The NTTA uses sophisticated intelligent transportation technology outfitted with Automated Incident Detection to help the team identify hazards, customers or incidents needing attention on the system. After an incident has been identified the team is deployed to ensure quick resolution, customer safety and traffic mobility.

The Roadway Customer Service unit also helps promote safety to NTTA employees through various methods, including roadway and safety tips. The team is also planning to attend community safety events to promote safety beyond the roadway.

The NTTA continues to partner with the Texas Department of Transportation and the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office Courtesy Patrol Unit to provide partial coverage of the Dallas North Tollway and the President George Bush Turnpike during peak hours.

Motorists needing non-emergency assistance can call the NTTA’s Command Center at 214.224.2203 (this number can be found on the back of your TollTag) to request assistance.
