Community Meetings Focus on Hulen Street Bridge Construction, Progress

Business owners and residents attending two NTTA open house meetings Sept. 13 gained a better understanding of specific construction activities associated with the Hulen Street bridge, as well as how the construction affects their daily commutes.  The meetings, which provided an overview of the Chisholm Trail Parkway construction project, are the first of many planned along the corridor as the NTTA works to keep businesses and residents connected to the project and aware of upcoming construction.

“As construction of the Chisholm Trail Parkway continues, it is important that the NTTA and our project partners work with the community all along the nearly 28-mile corridor to keep people informed,” said Elizabeth Mow, NTTA director of project delivery. “A project of this size will impact lots of individuals and organizations. We will work hard to lessen the impact that upcoming construction may have on our new neighbors.”

At the business meeting, the NTTA organized a Business Information Group to help foster open communication between the NTTA and business owners in the area. The group will convene on a quarterly basis, and the NTTA will provide vital updates about the project. Members of the group also can take advantage of a resource kit that the NTTA developed to help them communicate construction activities with their customers and suppliers.  The kit includes templates for letters, postcards and fliers as well as a fact sheet about the bridge construction and a progress report for the Chisholm Trail Parkway corridor.  If you own or manage a business in this area and are interested in joining this group, please call (817) 916-5015 or email ChisholmTrail@ntta.org.

Construction Update
Construction in the Hulen Street area has been in full swing since spring 2010. Here’s a breakdown of the work crews will perform in this area:

  • construction of a new Hulen Street bridge just east of the current bridge
  • construction of retaining walls
  • setting of bridge beams and decks
  • demolition of existing Hulen Street bridge

Crews recently began setting concrete beams for north and southbound Chisholm Trail Parkway in the Hulen Street bridge area and adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad’s Davidson Yard.  The beams are located on the north side of the Trinity River adjacent to West Vickery Boulevard. Workers began preparing the roadway for the construction of the approaches for the south end of the new Hulen Street bridge.  Additional adjustments were made to the traffic pattern along Hulen Street and Bridgeview Road to facilitate worker access and construction of the new bridge.

In the planning stage for more than 40 years, the Chisholm Trail Parkway is the first NTTA project in Tarrant and Johnson counties.  Once completed, the corridor will stretch 27.6 miles and provide motorists with a continuous route from downtown Fort Worth south to Cleburne.

The entire Chisholm Trail Parkway project is expected to open to traffic mid-2014.
