NTTA Assumes Responsibility for SH 121, Newest Segment of SH 121 Set To Open and New Rates Go Into Effect

On Aug. 31, State Highway (SH) 121 will become part of the NTTA System for the next 50 years. Additionally, drivers using State Highway (SH) 121 will have an additional nine miles of toll road to travel on, as the segment from Old Denton Road to Hillcrest Road is completed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and is opened to traffic. With the new segment open, SH 121 will be 16.7 miles in length. The next segment from Hillcrest Road to Hardin Road will open by January of 2010.

On midnight, new toll rates determined by the SH 121 project agreement will go into affect on the portion of the roadway currently open to traffic. These rates were established by the Regional Transportation Council and are slightly higher than toll rates currently being charged.

The following toll rates will be charged for two-axle passenger cars and trucks at the locations mentioned below. The first rate is for TollTag customers and the second rate will be charged to ZipCash customers. ZipCash is the NTTA’s ‘drive now, pay later’ program.
  • Denton Tap Main Lane Gantry, $0.45/ $0.65;
  • MacArthur Boulevard and Carrollton Parkway, $0.21/ $0.40;
  • Farm-to-Market (FM) 544, $0.29/ $0.48; and
  • FM 2281, $0.34/ $0.53

The following NTTA/RTC agreed upon toll rates will be charged for two-axle passenger cars and trucks traveling on Segment 2, the newest segment of SH 121. The first rate is for TollTag customers and the higher video rate will be charged to ZipCash customers.
  • Standridge Drive (west of the Main Lane Toll Gantry), $0.52/ $0.75;
  • Josey Lane (west of the Main Lane Toll Gantry), $0.63/ $0.91;
  • Josey Line Main Lane Toll Gantry, $1.18/ $1.71;
  • Standridge Drive (east of the Main Lane Toll Gantry), $0.66/ $0.96;
  • Josey Lane (east of the Main Lane Toll Gantry), $0.55/ $0.80;
  • Plano Parkway, $0.43/ $0.62;
  • Spring Creek Parkway, Preston Road and Ohio Drive, $0.21/ $0.40; and
  • Coit Road, $0.48/ $0.70.

Rates for all vehicles traveling on SH 121 or any other NTTA facility are posted on the NTTA Web site, www.ntta.org, and will be prominently displayed on rate signs on SH 121.

SH 121 is an all-electronic toll collection facility, thus having no toll booths. TollTag customers will have tolls deducted from their accounts. Vehicles without a TollTag, a TxDOT “TxTag” or a Harris County Toll Road Authority “EZ Tag” will have a photo taken of their license plate. A ZipCash invoice will then be mailed to the registered vehicle owner. The ZipCash rate is higher than the TollTag rate.

In 2007, the NTTA was granted the privilege to design, build, operate and maintain SH 121 in Collin, Dallas and Denton counties by the Texas Transportation Commission. In return, the NTTA provided a payment of $3.2 billion to the region. The Regional Transportation Council (RTC) will decide how those funds should be used for additional transportation projects throughout the region.

SH 121 was designed to be built in 5 segments – Segment 1, from Denton Tap Road to Old Denton Road is open to traffic; Segment 2, from Old Denton Tap Road to Hillcrest Road, will be open on September 1; Segment 3, from Hillcrest Road to Hardin Boulevard, is scheduled for opening by January 2010; Segment 4, from Hardin Boulevard to east of U.S. 75, is scheduled to open by January 2011; and Segment 5, improvements to the SH 121/DNT interchange, is scheduled to open by January 2012.
