Renovation Work on President George Bush Turnpike Continues Work is progressing on the renovation work at the southwest end of the President George Bush Turnpike (PGBT) in Irving. Crews are busy, up to six days each week, replacing existing retaining walls between MacArthur Boulevard and Los Colinas Boulevard, eastbound and westbound. Steps have been taken to ensure that traffic on both northbound and southbound frontage roads remain completely operational during renovations.
The $26-million renovation project started in August 2007. The project is anticipated to be completed in the summer of 2009, which is ahead of the original projected completion date.
Crews first concentrated their efforts around MacArthur Boulevard walls. They are now working at the Las Colinas Boulevard overpass walls.
In mid-July, the Las Colinas Boulevard bridge over the PBGT was closed for renovations and will remain closed until July 2009.
Motorists heading southbound on the frontage road will be detoured to N. MacArthur Boulevard where they will be able to make a U-turn and then access eastbound Las Colinas Boulevard. Motorists heading northbound on the frontage road will be detoured to Riverside Drive where they will be able to make a U-turn and then access westbound Los Colinas Boulevard.
In addition to construction crews on site, specially trained engineers have been retained to make certain that the old retaining walls are not shifting in a way that could compromise safety during the construction of the new walls. They have installed various monitoring devices and gauges.
The new concrete aesthetics on the retaining walls will be setting the standard for other NTTA facilities. The same outward look of the concrete walls will be used throughout the NTTA System.
