Sam Rayburn Tollway’s Third Phase to Open Fully by Oct. 1

The northern portion of the Sam Rayburn Tollway‘s (SRT) third phase will open to traffic Oct. 1, rounding out nearly 23 miles of vital roadway needed for improved mobility in the North Texas region.

The portion slated to open Oct. 1 extends north from Custer Road to Hardin Boulevard.  The southern portion of phase three is slated to open Sept. 1, and extends from Hillcrest Road to just north of Custer Road.  In total, the third phase is approximately seven miles long and is being delivered several months ahead of the NTTA/Texas Department of Transportation project agreement schedule.

“This is the first phase of the SRT built entirely by the NTTA,” said Gerry Carrigan, assistant executive director of project delivery. “We’re pleased that our crews have worked so hard to meet yet another regional transportation milestone.”

The SRT stretches 26 miles southwest to northeast, linking the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and growing communities in Collin, Dallas and Denton counties. The first two phases, approximately 16 miles, are open to traffic and extend from Denton Tap Road in Coppell to Hillcrest Road on the Plano/Frisco line.

The SRT has two additional phases to be constructed:
• Segment 4 – from Hardin Boulevard to east of Medical Center Drive including the SRT/U.S. 75 interchange; scheduled to open by January 2011.
• Segment 5 – consists of adding direct-connect bridges between the SRT and the Dallas North Tollway; scheduled to open by January 2012.

When complete, the SRT will feature six main lanes and all-electronic toll collection. For more information on the SRT and other NTTA roadways, visit www.ntta.org.
