The International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association recognized the North Texas Tollway Authority for its conversion to all-electronic tolling with the 2011 Toll Excellence Award in Operations.
“The NTTA is the first in the nation to transition an entire roadway system of this size to electronic, or cashless, tolling,” said Clayton Howe, NTTA assistant executive director of operations. “The switch to cashless tolling brings our region reduced congestion, improved safety and enhanced air quality through the free flow of traffic and the elimination of stopping and starting and weaving of toll booths.”
Because cash is no longer accepted on NTTA roads, tolls must be paid with a TollTag account or through the ZipCash program, the NTTA’s pay-by-invoice collection option. Customers who use ZipCash pay 50 percent more than customers who have TollTags because of the higher cost of collection. TollTags also can be used on any toll road in Texas, and customers can have up to three TollTags on one account at no additional charge. TollTags backed with credit or debit cards can be used to pay for terminal parking at Dallas Love Field Airport and for discounted parking and pass-through rates at D/FW International Airport. TollTag customers save $1 per day on D/FW terminal parking, and they pay just $1 to drive through DFW instead of the standard $2 rate.
IBTTA consists of more than 250 tolling organizations representing 20 countries. For more information about the Toll Excellence awards, visit www.ITBTTA.org.
