DNT South End Renovations Update It may be winter, but work continues on renovations on the 40-year old south end area of the Dallas North Tollway.
In December, work on the Cedar Springs Road Bridge was completed. The bridge now has two lanes in each direction, which has significantly improved the flow of traffic.
Drivers may have also noticed that crews have removed almost all of the toll booths at the Wycliff Avenue Main Lane Toll Plaza. The rest will be removed sometime in January. The gantry, or scaffolding, that holds electronic tolling equipment has also been removed as part of the project. A new temporary gantry was installed about two-tenths of a mile north of the old toll plaza and toll collection is continuing.
As progress continues, crews will be opening a new northbound entrance to the Tollway from Wycliff Avenue. It will also be necessary for crews to once again switch traffic onto alternate lanes between Wycliff and Lemmon Avenues. The next “switch” is anticipated sometime in January, although an exact date is not yet known. As always, the NTTA will work diligently to inform our customers by working with media outlets and by posting the information on our Web site, www.ntta.org
The DNT south end renovation project, which started in April 2006, will take approximately two years to complete. The $50-million capital improvement effort includes the demolition of the original main toll plaza at Wycliff Avenue, reconstruction of the pavement from Lemmon Avenue south to IH 35E, replacement of the Oak Lawn bridge and widening of Oak Lawn as it approaches the Tollway from the east and west, construction of new ramp access to Oak Lawn and replacement of the Cedar Springs bridge to widen the approach into the plaza.
