Five Things You Didn’t Know about the NTTA You probably know that the NTTA is a not-for-profit organization, that you can save up to 45 percent off the ZipCash rate by using a TollTag, that you can use your TollTag on any toll road in Texas. But did you also know these fun facts?
1. The NTTA processes more than 1 million transactions daily on its roadways.
2. In 2009, the NTTA will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the TollTag. In fact, the Dallas North Tollway was the first toll road in the nation to use the electronic TollTag system. Today, the NTTA boasts more than 1.5 million active TollTags and collects approximately 80 percent of its toll revenue electronically.
3. The NTTA has adopted a number of “green” initiatives for tollway environmental sustainability. They include:
- Using alternatives to environmentally “unfriendly” concrete work such as painting over concrete, which can peel and pollute the environment;
- Implementing a landscaping program designed to be sustainable, aesthetic and consistent with the natural environment;
- Remaining committed to clean water by utilizing storm water management systems and maintaining water collection systems on projects like the Lewisville Lake Toll Bridge and the President George Bush Turnpike Eastern Extension over Lake Ray Hubbard;
- Moving toward all-electronic toll collection, which improves vehicle fuel efficiency and air quality;
- Practicing aggressive recycling efforts at the Authority’s offices.
4. In the past few years, the NTTA has received several high honors and awards:
- In November 2008, the NTTA was selected as the Southwest region’s large deal finalist for The Bond Buyer’s “Deal of the Year” award for its financing of the State Highway 121 project.
