"Tie One On For Safety" This Holiday Season

The NTTA is working with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)–North Texas this holiday season in support of its largest public awareness campaign, “Tie One On For Safety.”

"We're pleased to partner with MADD on the Tie One on For Safety campaign. The hard work of the MADD staff and NTTA staff to promote responsible driving will certainly pay dividends for NTTA and all of us who travel area roads," said NTTA Executive Director Allen Clemson.  "There's still more for us to do and I'm confident we'll continue to make strides as we collectively tackle the issue of drunk driving."

More than 1,000 people are killed in the United States between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day from accidents involving drunk driving.  MADD created Tie One On For Safety, originally named the Project Red Ribbon campaign, in 1986 to help heighten public awareness about drinking and driving during the holiday season.  It was designed to encourage the public to take action against drunk driving by tying a red MADD ribbon to their vehicle’s antenna or side mirror.

“We applaud the efforts of the NTTA in working to keep their roadways safe and joining MADD to get the message out this holiday season to not drink and drive. Designate a driver, plan ahead- take a cab or just stay where you are, but do not drive your car impaired,” said Mary Kardell, MADD North Texas executive director.

The NTTA has helped distribute thousands of red ribbons to the Metroplex.  MADD also will be on hand this season distributing ribbons at several NTTA events, such as the NTTA’s Town Hall meeting to launch its new SafeTBuzz campaign at 7 p.m., Dec. 15, in the NTTA Board Room at NTTA headquarters, 5900 W. Plano Parkway, in Plano. Red ribbons are also available by calling MADD at (214) 637-0372.
