Government Affairs Update

With the 81st Texas Legislative session quickly approaching, the NTTA is working hard to develop a legislative program that will be beneficial to the North Texas region and the citizens we serve. The government affairs department continues to reach out to the NTTA’s member counties and their elected officials and citizens to ensure a successful session and progress for the region and its transportation needs.

On Thursday, May 29, NTTA Executive Director, Dr. Jorge Figueredo testified in front of the Texas Transportation Commission regarding NTTA’s experiences in working through the market valuation process and toll project development. Chairwoman Deirdre Delisi established a committee of Commissioners Bill Meadows and Ted Houghton and asked that they work with TxDOT staff and local toll authorities to determine a process for advancing toll projects, including consideration of bundling projects.

In other news, the NTTA is wrapping up its 2007 Annual Report presentations to its four member counties. As part of its enabling statute, the NTTA is required to provide a “state of the agency” report each year to Collin, Dallas, Denton and Tarrant counties. The presentations have been led by NTTA Chairman Paul N. Wageman and Board Members from their respective counties. The NTTA expects to have the 2007 Annual Report printed and distributed later this summer.

In June, the NTTA held a financing workshop for its Board Members. We have decided to take the show on the road and bring an abbreviated version of the workshop to each of the NTTA’s member counties later this year. The NTTA will contact the counties in the coming weeks to schedule these workshops.

Lastly, to enhance our communication to all four member counties, we are currently interviewing candidates for a second Government Affairs Manager position that would have responsibilities for local outreach efforts in Dallas and Collin counties.
