South End of Tollway Improvements Progressing The last portion of the Dallas North Tollway’s Wycliff Avenue Main Lane Plaza, a lone toll booth, was demolished the first week in April. That portion of the 32-mileTollway was opened to traffic in June 1968.
As work continues on the south end of the Tollway, the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) is using a new electronic system for tolling at the Wycliff Main Lane Plaza. An electronic bridge, or gantry, located about one-quarter mile north of the old Wycliff Plaza, collects information and tolls are charged via TollTag or ZipCash, a method of payment for customers who do not use a TollTag. ZipCash customers pay a higher rate, due to a premium assessed to compensate for the cost of collection.
Meanwhile, work continues to meet major project milestones in the completion of the $50 million renovation project. In late March and early April, traffic lanes were switched onto different portions of the toll road. With that traffic switch it opened up another large area of paving to construction crews that is now being removed and replaced. Additional traffic switches will be needed for the next few months.
In addition, the southbound Lemmon Avenue entrance ramp is closed for two-and-a-half weeks. It is being reconstructed and should open before the end of April.
NTTA officials are planning for the three main lanes of traffic in each direction to be open by the end of August, the original completion date for this massive effort.
Decisions to improve the NTTA system, such as all-Electronic Toll Collection, will result in additional work after August, but the project will be substantially complete, with a full three lanes in each direction, this summer.
