Government Affairs Update On Sept. 30, Congress passed a one-month extension of the federal surface transportation legislation, known as the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), which was set to expire at midnight. The one-month extension was part of a continuing resolution, H.R. 2918.
In addition, Congress was not successful in repealing the $8.7 billion rescission that went into effect on Sept. 30. The Texas Department of Transportation will be sending $740 million back to the federal government as a result of the rescission. In September, the NTTA sent a letter to the D/FW congressional delegation and Congressional Transportation Committee leadership opposing the rescissions due to the potentially severe impact on the delivery of critical mobility projects across the state.
As of this eNewsletter's distribution, Congress has one month to reach a consensus on how to address surface transportation legislation - or pursue another extension. The NTTA will continue to monitor federal developments and coordinate with our statewide mobility partners as the discussion continues in Washington.
